2013-2014 OPEN BOARD POSITIONS
The purpose of our guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educate members
and provide for the interchange of information. We rely on the talents of ALL guild members
to function. It is very important to have people step up and volunteer for the open board
positions.
The board positions are two years terms and include attending a monthly board meeting.
General information regarding each of these positions can be found in Article III—Board of
Directors Duties in the Eastern Polk Quilters’ Guild By-Laws.
** Vice-President
** Treasurer
** Member-at-Large
** Program Chair — looking for possibly co-chairs or a small group
** Newsletter
If you have an interest in one of these positions or you would like more information or you
know of someone who would be a candidate for a board position, please contact Marsha
Horner at 515.979.7218 or Marlee Jennings at 515.965.8094.
DENISE SPRAIN TRUNK SHOW AT MONDAY, AUGUST 20 MEETING
NOTE: Sunday, August 19th Denise Sprain Workshop CANCELLED
Denise Sprain from the Iowa Falls Sewing Center will be presenting a trunk show of her quilts, projects, and some of her newest and best patterns. Since the workshop for the Christmas Tree Skirt that was to be held on Sunday was cancelled, Denise will be bringing the pattern to the meeting on Monday, along with many, many more items from her store. She and her husband will set up the items before the meeting begins, so be sure to arrive early if you would like a chance to shop. They will also be leaving early so they can get back to Iowa falls and prepare to open the shop on Tuesday morning.
CRAFT SHOW WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT
The Craft Show for this year will again be held at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Des Moines on November 10th from 9 to 3 pm. Gundel Basart is chairing the sale, so please
contact her with any questions. Included in the August Newsletter (and at bottom of this page) is the list she has so kindly provided us with TONS of ideas, so now we have NO EXCUSES!!
The Craft Show is a big moneymaker for the Guild, so the sooner we all get started on making
things to sell, the better!
CONGRATULATIONS TO SHARON MEADOWCROFT
Forgive me if I missed other winners at the Iowa State Fair, but there were sooooo many quilts
and this one did stand out. Sharon received a first place blue ribbon for a beautiful quilt with
baskets of 3 dimensional flowers. Hope you saw it. If you have not been to the fair yet, it’s on the lower level of the Varied Industries Building in the room with all the first place quilts.
We have received a request from ChildServe to help out with a project making banners,
flags and napkins to decorate the walls and tables of their café. If you are interested in
participating, please pick up an information sheet at the sign in table at the guild meeting,
Any questions please call Linda Smith at 265-0429 or email smithlk@earthlink.net

To all Guild Members: Thank you so much for your donation of fabric and snippets for the quilts and pillows we make for My Brother’s Keeper in Mitchellville. It is your generosity that provides

SEPTEMBER 16 WORKSHOP
ECHO SHAPE IMPROVISATION SWEATSHIRT JACKET
Join Jennifer Bernard on Sunday, September 16th at 1pm at Lutheran Church of the Cross for
an afternoon of creative fun turning a sweatshirt into a fun jacket. You will be altering a sweatshirt to to open down the front, bias bind the edges, and extend the edge of the sweatshirt with piecing. You will choose from 4 shapes — a heart, a leaf, flower, or square, then cut them out as smaller and smaller echoes, scatter them creatively over the sweatshirt and fuse in place. The edges of the shapes will need to be buttonhole stitched or zigzagged. (The technique will be demonstrated in class, but you will not be able to to finish all the stitching in the afternoon workshop.) Rickrack, bias stems, and button can be added for more improvisation! You will learn to make pockets from from the shapes and add cuffs to the sleeves, and also how to get a better fit to those boxy sweatshirts. This jacket does not have a written pattern, so if
you want to create a unique improvised jacket come join in the fun at the workshop.
See August Newsletter for photo of project.
Here is the actual 2012 Raffle Quilt that will be drawn for in December.
The pattern is Hunter's Star. It was sewn by the small group "Tuesday Morning Cutups" and quilted by Linda McGee.
